(CNN) — New York City will open the city’s first asylum-seeker arrival center next week, as hundreds of migrants continue to arrive in the city each day, following the expiration of a pandemic-era border restriction, city officials said. The center will double as the city’s ninth Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center, as officials continue to plea for more state and federal government support in handling what Mayor Eric Adams refers to as a national crisis.Officials have warned the expiration of Title 42, which went into effect on Thursday, could invite a crush of migrants and aggravate the humanitarian crisis at the southern border, CNN previously reported. The policy has been kept in place by the courts and used by the Biden administration to deal with migrants at the border.Adams said in a news release Saturday the Roosevelt Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, which has been closed for nearly three years, will host the arrival and humanitarian center. (CNN) — Loonkiito, possibly one of the oldest lions in the world, has been killed in Kenya at the age of 19, conservation organization Lion Guardians said. The lion was killed on Wednesday by the owner of a livestock pen, which Loonkiito had entered in the middle of the night looking for prey due to being “starving,” the organization said.He was “the oldest male lion in our ecosystem and possibly in Africa,” said Lion Guardians, which announced his passing “with heavy hearts.”“He was a symbol of resilience and coexistence. We at Lion Guardians feel privileged to have borne witness to his life and his legacy,” it added. The organization attributes the long life of older wild lions in recent times, in a landscape where a “decade ago, we did not have lions surviving past age 10,” to the efforts of local communities that share the land with the big cats.A dramatic increase in the demand for energy and materials over the las...As Sweden wins Eurovision, Russia bombs Ukrainian entry’s home town

Amid the feather dresses, smoke machines, self-playing pianos and more LED lights and sequins than you could shake a stick at, a powerful vocal performance, a plinth and some truly incredible nail artistry clinched Eurovision 2023 for Sweden.Lorine Zineb Nora Talhaoui, known as Loreen, delivered a note-perfect rendition of her song “Tattoo” — and with it, propelled Sweden to equal Ireland as the two most successful countries in the colorful competition’s history, each with seven wins. But at a contest created to bring European countries together with song, glitz and glamor after they were torn apart by World War II, the specter of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine hung over proceedings.Just minutes before Ukrainian act Tvorchi took to the Eurovision stage, reports emerged that Russia had attacked its home city of Ternopil in Ukraine’s west, around three hours’ drive from the Polish border. It cast a somber hue over an event known as much for bombas...Emergency crews searching for missing person in Lake Cochituate in Natick

WASHINGTON — The decision to play Saturday’s 4:05 p.m. contest between the Mets and the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park ultimately proved to be the wrong one. Chicago Cubs right-hander Hayden Wesneski dropped his head and stared at the dirt mound. The Minnesota Twins had just clubbed their fourth home run of the game off Wesneski — the last Jorge Polanco’s 409-foot, two-run homer in the fifth — to build a seven-run lead. Each came from the bat of left-handed hitter who swatted Wesneski’s too many mistakes. The Cubs couldn’t overcome the home run barrage in an 11-1 blowout loss at Target Field.Tucker Barnhart’s RBI single in the seventh prevented the Cubs (19-20) from getting shut out the first time this season.“Trying to make pitches and sometimes whether that’s mechanical or concentration, what are those factors, we’ll look at and try to get a plan these next four days and get back to work,” manager David Ross said of Wesneski. “We haven’t had many clunkers like that early on (when) we’re out of the game.”Wesneski struggled to command his stuff around the ...Watch on FOX 5: San Diego Loyal SC vs. Rio Grande Valley FC Toros

BANGKOK (AP) — Voters in Thailand were heading to the polls on Sunday in an election touted as a pivotal chance for change, eight years after incumbent Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha first came to power in a 2014 coup. He is now running against the daughter of the politician who is the military’s top nemesis. The opposition Pheu Thai Party, headed by Paetongtarn Shinawatra, is widely predicted to win at least a healthy plurality of the seats in the 500-member lower House. But who heads the next government won’t by decided by Sunday’s vote alone. The prime minister will be selected in July in a joint session of the House and the 250-seat Senate. The winner must secure at least 376 votes and no party is likely to do that on its own.Pheu Thai won the most seats in the last election in 2019, but its archrival, the military-backed Palang Pracharath Party, succeeded in cobbling together a coalition with Prayuth as prime minister.
