Cambridge City Council asked to oppose ‘Copy City’ in Atlanta, 1 thousand miles away

Though it may be a thousand miles away, Cambridge community members are calling on the City Council to oppose supporting the construction of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center “or any similar facilities, in any way.”A policy order in front of the City Council would put it on record in opposition to the Cambridge Police Department sending trainees to, or participating in any collaborations with, the facility being built to primarily serve Atlanta public safety personnel.Several Cambridge community members, in emails to councilors and at a meeting last week, have voiced concerns over how the new facility, dubbed by critics as ‘Cop City,’ would lead to environmental harm and make officers trained there “more violent.”The $90 million center, being constructed on 85 acres in Atlanta’s South River Forest, has drawn wide criticism from environmental, racial and safety justice advocates.“Any officers sent to the proposed Cop City would be trained to be more violent, more militaristic...

Ground attack helps St. John’s Prep nip Central Catholic in 30-28 thriller

DANVERS — Sometimes, a little execution in situational football can mean everything. With that, plus a dominant effort on the ground from its two-headed monster at running back, St. John’s Prep earned a 30-28 win over Central Catholic on Saturday at Glatz Field. The sequence in question came at the end of the first half. Central (0-2) held a 14-13 lead, but the Prep (2-0) was driving. The Eagles moved out in front when Prep quarterback Deacon Robillard hit running back Dylan Aliberti for a 30-yard touchdown over the middle. The Eagles were not done. Defensive back Grayson Ambrosh made a nice interception and run back to put the ball at the Central 15. Kicker Langdon Laws then drilled a 32-yard field goal with two seconds left in the half. That gave Prep a 23-14 lead at the break.“It’s the difference in the game. We won by two, that field goal (was the difference),” Prep coach Brian St. Pierre said. “We shouldn’t have put ourselves in that situation. ...

Republican candidates skipping over New Hampshire to in favor of Iowa

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Once upon a time, the moderates, the mavericks and the underdogs in presidential politics had a chance to break through in New Hampshire.Former Sen. John McCain, an independent-minded Republican, resurrected his anemic campaign with a victory in the state’s first-in-the-nation presidential primary in 2008. Bill Clinton, a centrist Democrat from Arkansas, became the “comeback kid” by exceeding expectations here in 1992. And little-known Georgia peanut farmer, Jimmy Carter, would go on to claim the presidency after winning the state’s 1976 Democratic primary. But this year, New Hampshire’s primary tradition may be little more than a fairy tale as the presidential field largely overlooks the Granite State.Democratic officials, who have rallied behind President Joe Biden, have already decided to bypass New Hampshire in favor of South Carolina. And the crowded Republican field is focusing its money, time and attention on Iowa, betting big that the Midw...

Maura Healey lifted a state of emergency declared just before its arrival.Lee made landfall later in Nova Scotia with maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour, according to a 5 p.m. update from the National Hurricane Center. Strong winds, coastal flooding, and heavy rains  occurred in portions of Maine and Atlantic Canada, according to the center. But Boston and much of Massachusetts appeared to be in the relative clear as the post-tropical cyclone moved further north, National Weather Service Meteorologist Rob Megnia said. Boston experienced sub-tropical storm force winds, with an early morning gust recorded at Logan Airport reaching 38 mph.“It’s still pretty windy and breezy but it’s really nothing more than a kind of a poor New England weather type of day today,” Megnia said. “We’ll start to see the nort...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The state of California filed a lawsuit against some of the world’s largest oil and gas companies, claiming they deceived the public about the risks of fossil fuels now faulted for climate change-related storms and wildfires that caused billions of dollars in damage, officials said Saturday. The civil lawsuit filed in state Superior Court in San Francisco also seeks creation of a fund — financed by the companies — to pay for recovery efforts following devastating storms and fires.
